Celebrating 41st Anniversary, Biology Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Udayana University (Unud) Greens Batu Lumbang Ecotourism Area through Mangrove Planting

DENPASAR – The Biology Conservation Program, a series of events and the 41st anniversary celebration of the Biology Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Udayana University (Unud), included concrete environmental conservation actions. The entire academic community, consisting of lecturers and students, took to the field to plant mangroves on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The activity took place in the Batu Lumbang Mangrove Ecotourism Area, Pemogan Village, South Denpasar District, Denpasar City. The main actor in this activity is the Biology Student Association (Himabio) of the Biology Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University. Himabio regularly carries out mangrove planting activities every year in various locations in Bali.

The collective activity, held under the direction of the Biology Undergraduate Study Program Coordinator, Prof. Dra. Luh Putu Eswaryanti Kusuma Yuni, M.Sc., Ph.D., involved 68 participants from the Biology Study Program. This environmental awareness campaign was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University, Prof. Dra. Ni Luh Watiniasih, M.Sc., Ph.D.

Synergy and Cross-Level Support

The presence of cross-level study program leaders at this activity emphasized their solidarity and shared commitment to the future of Bali's coastal ecosystems. Also present at the event were the Coordinator of the Master's Program in Biology, Prof. Dr. Sang Ketut Sudirga, S.Si., M.Sc., and the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Biology, Prof. Drs. Yan Ramona, M.App.Sc., Ph.D.

The implementation of the program also provided active assistance in the mobility and technical aspects of planting in the field from the local management group of the Batu Lumbang Mangrove Ecotourism. The synergy between academics and area managers ensured that each planting process followed the appropriate zoning of the brackishwater forest ecosystem.

High Enthusiasm for Global Climate Mitigation

All mangrove planting participants engaged in the activity with enthusiasm and joy. Despite having to come into direct contact with the mud typical of coastal habitats, the lecturers and students worked together to plant mangrove propagules (seedlings) in the designated areas.

The joy and enthusiasm radiated throughout the event were accompanied by high hopes from the entire academic community. The mangrove propagules planted during this anniversary celebration of the study program are expected to grow optimally, accelerating efforts to restore Denpasar's coastal green areas and making a tangible contribution to mitigating climate change caused by global warming.

Through this mangrove planting activity on the study program's 41st anniversary, the Biology Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Udayana University, once again demonstrated its role not only as a center for learning scientific theory, but also as a pioneer of the conservation movement with a direct impact on the sustainability of the earth.
