Enhancing Digital Competence: Unud Biology Hosts Data Analysis Workshop Using R Programming

JIMBARAN – The Biology Study Program of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Udayana University, successfully conducted an intensive workshop titled ‘An Introduction to Analysing Data in R’. The event took place over two days, Tuesday, June 25, 2024, and Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the FMIPA Udayana University campus.

The workshop featured international expert Dr. Davide Thambithurai, a Postdoctoral Researcher from the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement), France, affiliated with UMR MARBEC (a joint research unit of IRD, Ifremer, Université de Montpellier, and CNRS).

In the era of modern biology, the ability to manage and analyze complex datasets has become an essential skill. A total of 32 participants, including faculty members and biology students, attended the session with great enthusiasm. The workshop was designed to provide a solid foundation for young researchers in using R programming as a credible and reproducible tool for data analysis.

The curriculum covered a comprehensive data processing lifecycle, including:

Best Practices of Data Collection: Ensuring field data is structured for optimal analysis.

Introduction to R: Understanding why R is the gold standard in contemporary biological research.

Programming Basics: Installation of R and RStudio, understanding data classes, and indexing techniques.

Data Wrangling & Exploration: Data manipulation using the tidyverse ecosystem and visual data exploration techniques.

This workshop is expected to significantly enhance data literacy within the academic community of Biology Unud. By mastering R, students and lecturers can transition from manual data processing to more accurate and efficient computational systems, ultimately improving the quality and impact of the study program’s international scientific publications.
