Introducing Study Prospects in Japan: Kwansei Gakuin University Conducts Guest Lecture on Microbiology and Bioprospecting

The Biology Study Program of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Udayana University, welcomed a prestigious delegation from Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU), Japan on August 28th, 2025. This visit, held at the FMIPA Unud campus, aimed to strengthen academic collaboration while providing students with fresh insights through an international guest lecture and socialisation of postgraduate study opportunities in Japan.

The event was attended by approximately 60 participants, including faculty members and students. The presence of the KGU delegation is seen as a strategic milestone for the Biology Study Program in achieving its internationalization goals and expanding research networks in the fields of microbiology and bioprospecting.

The first scientific session featured Prof. Shinsuke Fujiwara, an expert in his field. In his presentation titled “The Beneficial Role of Polyamines Produced in Microorganisms,” he delved into the vital role of polyamines produced by microbes. Prof. Fujiwara explained how these organic compounds hold immense potential for various biotechnological and health applications, and how a deep understanding of microbial metabolism can pave the way for broader bioprospecting exploration in the future.

The second session was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Bibin Bintang Adriana, focusing on a topic highly anticipated by students: “A Glimpse of Studying and Pursuing a Career in Japan and Rapid Analysis and Non-Destructive Methods for Biology Samples.” Prof. Bibin provided not only technical knowledge regarding rapid and non-destructive analysis methods for biological samples—essential for modern laboratory efficiency—but also inspired Unud Biology students to pursue further studies in Japan. He shared practical tips regarding the Japanese education system, scholarship opportunities, and an overview of building a professional career in an international research environment.

Throughout the event, the discussion was highly interactive. Students showed great enthusiasm, asking questions ranging from microbiological technicalities to admission procedures at Kwansei Gakuin University. Faculty members from Unud Biology also actively engaged in discussions regarding potential joint research collaborations between the two institutions. The event concluded with a shared commitment between the Biology Study Program of FMIPA Unud and Kwansei Gakuin University to continue working in synergy. This collaboration is expected to transcend guest lectures and evolve into student exchange programs, collaborative research, and joint publications that will enhance graduate quality and the academic reputation of both universities.
